Chromebooks continue to improve, but none feel “cutting edge.”
HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook. This Chromebook has a haptic touchpad, Intel vPro processor, and 5-megapixel webcam.

I reviewed a $1,734 Elite Dragonfly Chromebook with a 12th-gen Intel Core i5–1245U and a 13.5-inch 3:2 WXUGA IPS display. Thin, light, and stylish, the 2-in-1 was speedy thanks to its CPU. Premium Chromebooks have never existed.

Design

The 2.8-pound Elite Dragonfly Chromebook is made of magnesium-aluminum. I’ve noticed bending in laptop lids and keyboard decks. The laptop’s metal is sturdy, so it can withstand some damage. HP tested the laptop’s durability using MIL-STD 810H.
It’s less stiff than all-aluminum versions. The HP Elite C1030 Chromebook and Lenovo ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook feel robust. The Elite Dragonfly Chromebook’s hinge lets you open the lid with one hand and holds the display in clamshell, tent, media, and tablet modes.

The Elite Dragonfly Chromebook is 0.65 inches thin and lightweight. Its display bezels are thin on the sides but bigger on top and bottom.
Given its 13.5-inch 3:2 display, the 2-in-1 is nicely sized, roughly an inch narrower than skinny 14-inch 2-in-1s but as deep as 16:10 models. It sports a 13.5-inch 3:2 display like the Elite C1030 Chromebook. Given its display size, the Elite Dragonfly Chromebook is tiny.

Elite Dragonfly Chromebook’s design matches the rest of the range. Dark blue that borders black, with basic, minimalist lines. Chrome accents are on the hinges and the lid, but the laptop is otherwise plain. It’s lovely without being flashy. Elite C1030 Chromebook is flashier than Lenovo ThinkPad C14 Chromebook Enterprise.

Ports

Connectivity is a strength for a thin, light laptop and a Chromebook. First, the Chromebook has two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4, which is rare. This allows for expansion with HP’s Thunderbolt docks and up to three external screens.

USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI 2.0, 3.5mm audio connector, and microSD card reader are all included.

Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, 4G LTE, and 5G WWAN are wireless possibilities.

Performance

My evaluation unit had a 15-watt Intel 12th-gen Core i5–1245U with vPro with 10 cores (2 Performance, 8 Efficient) and 12 threads. It’s Intel’s mid-range processor for thin-and-light laptops, with P-series at 28 watts and U-series at 9 watts. Chrome OS is lightweight and efficient, therefore the Core i5–1245U is practically overkill. When configured with 32GB of RAM, the Elite Dragonfly Chromebook should fly.

I can’t run our entire suite of benchmarks on Chromebooks, but the Elite Dragonfly Chromebook scored well in the Android version of Geekbench 5. The Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 with an 11th-gen four-core/eight-thread Core i5–1135G7 was marginally faster in multi-core mode. In Speedometer 2.0, the HP scored 206, beating the Chromebook Flip CX5.

Simply told, the Elite Dragonfly Chromebook is tough to beat. I opened many Chrome tabs and ran Android apps in the background but couldn’t slow down the laptop.
