Micron Technology will develop the largest U.S. semiconductor factory in Onondaga County, New York.

Micron expects the megafab to cost $100 billion and take 20 years to build. The new factory will create 50,000 New York jobs and 9,000 high-paying Micron jobs. Once completed, Micron will have four 600,000-square-foot cleanrooms (2.4 million square feet), or 40 US football fields.

This long-term effort will help the corporation produce 40% of its global DRAM in the US.

“This historic memory megafab in Central New York will drive American innovation and competitiveness for decades,” said Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra.

Site preparation in Clay, New York will begin in 2023, construction in 2024, and production “later in the decade.” Micron will invest $20 billion in the first phase of the project, which is supported by $5.5 billion in state subsidies. Micron expects federal subsidies and tax credits from the CHIPS and Science Act to encourage hiring and capital investment.
The megafab news follows Micron’s $15 billion commitment to build a memory fab in Boise, Idaho last month.
